“Illustrated Guide to Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces” is a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting famous places throughout Japan. It is a series of 70 famous places. It was produced between 1853 (Kaei 6) and 1856 (Ansei 3), and is a work from Hiroshige’s later years. All the prints are vertically long, with a large foreground to emphasize the perspective, and bold trimming, creating an innovative composition. #55 Awa: Wind and Waves at Naruto is an ukiyo-e work that is hailed as a masterpiece in the series.
